Fire At Dearborn Substation Kills Power For About 6,000 Residents, Businesses

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A large power outage Monday morning has lights and power out in Dearborn.  A small fire was spotted from Chopper 950 at a substation near Warren and Schaefer.  About 6,000 homes and businesses in an area of Joy to Ford Road and Wyoming to Schaefer are without power.

Bill Szumanski reporting from WWJ Chopper 950 above the scene just after 7 a.m.

"All of the houses, businesses and traffic signals are completely dark here for this few square miles -- from Joy Road down to Ford Road -- Wyoming west toward Greenfield -- everything in that interior perimeter is completely dark," said Szumanski. "We did see a small fire inside what looks to be a DTE substation at Warren and Maple in Dearborn -- fire and police rolling up to the scene -- gates are locked, they are waiting on somebody to open them and it looks like that may be happening now."

A time frame for restoration is unclear at this time.
