Ferndale Man Who Was Sucker Punched Could Be Victim Of 'Knockout Game'
FERNDALE (WWJ) -- Ferndale Police are investigating an apparent random one-punch attack that left a man unconscious -- with a concussion, broken jaw and chipped teeth.
Police believe the attack could be the result of something known as the "knockout game" -- where attackers try to knock out their victims with a single punch.
Eddie Ewing, 53, said that he wanted people to be aware what happened to him so they could be ready to handle the situation.
"I was about to say 'hello' to these guys and the next thing I know, I'm in the hospital," Ewing said.
Ewing says he was simply walking home last Sunday with a friend along Woodward Avenue just north of Eight Mile leaving a White Castle restaurant when two men approached.
"As we walked by them, one of them sucker punched me and completely knocked me out," Ewing said. "I hit the pavement -- he broke my jaw. They then ran off -- laughing -- and jumped into a car that was waiting for them."
At first Ewing wondered if he was the victim of a hate crime.
"I can't work at the moment, I'm uninsured," Ewing said. "This is really going to take a devastating toll on my life just for someone's little thrill of a punch."
The case is under investigation.
