Fear Of Frostbite Puts Chill On Skiiing At Local Slopes

DETROIT (WWJ) - The slopes at Mt Holly and Mt Brighton are silent Tuesday. The ski resorts decided to shut down over fears of frostbite in the subzero wind chills.

Steve Gazley of Redford showed up at Mt Brighton to snowboard, but was turned away.

"Pretty disappointed, the perfectly groomed park ... to hit the ramps and you can't snowboard, it's frustrating - a little bit, especially with a season pass," said Gazley.

Gazley said he understands that small children should not be exposed to the extreme cold but feels he can handle the weather given the choice.

Mt. Brighton General Manager Taylor Ogilvie says it's rare that the resort closes, especially for a second time in one season. "We're snowboarders , so we want it cold."

Ogilvie took one look at the wind chill factor and decided it wasn't worth anyone getting frostbite.

"We looked at the windchill temps this morning and just decided it was too cold for our guests and for our employees to open - it was too cold ... talked to some of our competitors as well and (they) felt the same."
