Father Of Girl Killed In Detroit Police Raid Convicted Of Murder

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A Detroit man whose daughter was accidentally killed by police during a raid has been convicted of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a teenager.

Charles Jones, 28, was accused of providing the gun that was used in the death of 17-year-old Je'Rean Blake, who was killed outside an east side Detroit party store in 2010.

Jones' daughter, 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, was shot in the head by a police officer days later as she slept on a couch. Police had stormed the home looking for another suspect in the Blake homicide.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Jones was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder and perjury.

Jones' co-defendant, 37-year-old Chauncey Owens, was found guilty last week of first-degree murder and felony firearms and felon in possession of a firearms charges. Owens' verdict was sealed until Jones' was read.

Jones will be sentenced on March 14; and Owens the following day.

Meantime, it's still unclear if the cop who fired the shot that killed Aiyana will be convicted in her death. Detroit police officer Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter, a felony.

Weekley claims he accidentally pulled the trigger when Aiyana's grandmother, Mertilla Jones, grabbed his submachine gun. The grandmother denies she touched the gun, and another officer testified that there was no struggle over the weapon.

A judge declared a mistrial in that case after a jury has failed to reach a verdict. Weekley faces a new trial later this year.
