Woman Killed In Shooting At Taylor Burlington Coat Factory

TAYLOR (WWJ) - One person has been killed in a shooting at a Downriver Burlington Coat Factory store.

Police remain on the scene, Monday morning, in the Burlington Square Plaza on Eureka Road near Telegraph Road, across from Southland Mall in Taylor.

According to police, one employee shot another employee at around 7 a.m. Police said the alleged shooter — a woman — was taken into custody at the store. The female victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. No one else was hurt.

Taylor Commander Richard Hopper said the shooting stemmed from a dispute between the two women over something that happened at work.

"The employees were coming in for work. The store was not open to the public and the employees were just checking into work at the time," Hopper told reporters, Monday afternoon. "There were multiple employees that were at the store when it happened and we are trying to interview all of them to get the details of the incident now."

Police were inside the store gathering evidence as an investigation continues.

As the suspect and the victim's cars were towed from the parking lot, WWJ's Zahra Huber spoke with a man who identified himself as the suspect's fiancé. He said the woman, who he called Sandra, isn't a violent person.

"No parking tickets, never been to jail, never been arrested," Danny Wade said. "...She never had enemies, she don't look for enemies, she avoids all the troubles, she don't need no trouble, she don't want trouble."

"I feel sorry for the victim's family that this incident went so far out of control," he added.

The Burlington store is closed for the day, although neighboring stores in the shopping center remain open for business. A sign on the door stated that the store would reopen on Tuesday.
