Celebrating Black History Month, Farmington Hills Residents Hold MLK Day Event

Jaclyn Miller is the Branch Head of the Farmington Hills Community Library. She tells the Eye On Detroit crew that the first official gathering of this kind at the library took place in 2001 and it's become a thriving annual event.

This feature is part of CBS 62's Eye On Detroit series as seen weekdays during "CBS This Morning" between 7 and 9 a.m.

Parents and students start at the neighboring Prince of Peace Church and join others at the library for an educational and inspirational program including keynote speaker LaNesha DeBardelaben from the Charles H. Wright Museum and the Dunkel Middle School choir.

Area resident Lewis Johnson participates in the event with his family so they understand the importance. "Martin Luther King was such a courageous man just so young doing everything he did for the civil rights movement."

The library is well-suited to this kind of event cultivating community and collaboration. Miller said they are glad to be available for the residents everyday and especially on MLK Day.
