Family Argument Turns Deadly In Detroit: Mother Killed, Son In Custody

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a mother was accidentally killed by her son when an argument broke out at the family's home on Detroit's west side.

The incident happened around 10 p.m. Thursday in the 18000 block of Ferguson, in a neighborhood along Outer Drive between the Southfield Freeway and Greenfield Road.

Police spokesperson Cassandra Lewis said the woman's husband and son were having some sort of argument. When the woman tried to intervene, a gun that was in her husband's waistband fell to the floor. The son then grabbed the gun, which discharged and fatally struck his mother, according to police.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The son, who is in his 20s, was taken into police custody.

Lewis said the shooting is being investigated as an accident.

Names of those involved were not released.

An investigation is ongoing.
