Explosion Destroys Popular Coney Island Restaurant

DETROIT (WWJ) - An early morning explosion has destroyed a popular Detroit eatery.

Jack's Coney Island on 7 Mile east of Telegraph exploded around 2 a.m. Monday morning. One nearby resident heard the 'boom.'

"I'm going to tell you something, late last night I heard, like, the boom, but you know the big rig trucks come through and make that noise, you wouldn't have thought that was that," he said.

Across the street is a gas station - Asans Klowie, the attendant, spoke with WWJ and said he heard the explosion.

"All I heard was the big sound of the explosion," he said."I looked back - I thought it was my gas station. The whole gas station was shaking for a second. I look over and I see fire, at the coney island, and the shades on the window, they were melting. So, I'm like, there's fire, the coney island is on fire."

The restaurant was closed on Sunday and no one was hurt in the explosion. DTE crews are working to repair the gas main.
