Ex-Nurse Charged With Sexually Assaulting Mentally Incapacitated Patient

LANSING (WWJ) -- A former nurse at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital has been charged with sexually assaulting a female patient described as "mentally incapacitated."

28-year-old Sulaiman Awad has been charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with an incapacitated victim and three counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct as a mental health professional, according to the Lansing State Journal.

The felony complaint listed three different sex acts. According to his attorney, Awad worked at the hospital as a nurse but is no longer employed by Sparrow.

The first three counts could result in up to a 15-year prison sentence each, and the last two carry up to two years in prison.

A trial is expected to begin on Sept. 28 in Ingham County Circuit Court.
