Ex-Michigan Rep. Schauer To Lead Democrats' Redistricting Effort

LANSING(AP) - Former congressman and Michigan gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer will lead a national effort to position Democrats for success in the next round of redistricting after the 2020 census.

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee on Thursday announced the hiring of Schauer as director of its "Advantage 2020" project and a new related super political action committee.

Schauer says state lawmakers will have a direct role in redrawing legislative and congressional districts in 36 states encompassing 336 congressional seats. If a party has full control of a legislature and the governor's office, it can draw lines in its favor.

Schauer says GOP gerrymandering has led to "ultra-conservative measures" passed at the state level and a U.S. House that's "no longer held accountable."

Schauer lost last year to incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.
