Ex-Director Of Hindu Temple Pleads Guilty To Embezzling

FLINT TWP. (WWJ/AP) - The ex-director of a Flint-area Hindu temple has pleaded guilty to a count of embezzling more than $100,000.

Hanumanthaiya Marur, 76, pleaded guilty Monday, according to The Flint Journal. He initially faced 37 felony counts, but under a plea agreement, three dozen of the charges were dropped.

Marur was director of Paschima Kasi Sri Viswanatha Temple in Flint Township. In the plea agreement, he has six months to reimburse money to the temple, and in return prosecutors and temple officials agreed to recommend that he get no upfront time in jail.

Marur's attorney, Michael Manley, has said that the money was reimbursement for work done by Marur on the temple, including renovations in 2013.

The temple is 65 feet tall and is adorned with representations of 126 gods.
