Ex-Convict, 21, Pleads Guilty In Wounding Of Lansing Girl, 2

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A 21-year-old ex-convict accused of accidentally shooting and critically wounding a 2-year-old Lansing girl has pleaded guilty to firearms in a deal with prosecutors.

Jaylen L. Briggs of Lansing made the plea Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court. He says he wasn't in his "right mind" and made a "bad choice."

Briggs pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, having a firearm while committing a felony and careless discharge of a firearm causing injury. Prosecutors have dropped a concealed weapons charge as part of the deal.

Police say Briggs shot the girl April 17, then fled. They say he knew the girl's family.
Judge Rosemarie Aquilina scheduled Briggs's sentencing July 15.
