Enormous Sink Hole Opens In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - An enormous sinkhole popped up on Detroit's west side Sunday night, leaving a crater that's 10 feet wide and at least 10 feet deep.

Neighbors reported the roadway had needed constant patching until it suddenly opened up.

The hole is out in front of Alonzo Norwood's house on Carlysle near Tireman and he says that is made quite a racket when it opened up — right before his eyes.

"To me, it's almost like an earthquake, other than there wasn't (any) shaking of the houses," he said. "It was shocking because I'm standing...I'm right here in front of it. Look, look where I'm at!"

Norwood told WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey that neighbors had been calling the city for the past two weeks, asking them to do something about what was originally just a dip in the road that was being patched over and over again.

"I'm looking at the people going over it, hitting it, and they're like going airborne, you know," Norwood said.

People in the neighborhood had to rope off the street on their own so no one would drive into it. Detroit Water and Sewerage employees were headed out Monday to begin repair work.
