'Empty The Shelters' Day Is October 22 Across Michigan With Free Pet Adoptions

DETROIT (WWJ) - Looking to add a bit of warmth and wag to your home this fall?  You can help 'Empty the Shelters' on Saturday, Oct. 22 and give a dog or cat a forever home.

Cathy Bissell hopes hundreds will take advantage of the opportunity to give a pet a home.

The Grand Rapids-based non-profit, BISSELL Pet Foundation, will pay all adoption fees at more than 50 shelters and rescue organizations during the one-day adoption event.

"We will cover their adoption fee at these organizations - at every single organization - we will not be covering ... the license. They will have to get a license for their pet and that can range from $7 to $12," says Bissell, founder of the pet foundation.

Bissell hopes to double the number of pets adopted during their May event --  with a goal of 1,200 cats and dogs finding new families.
