Emaciated Calf Left In Trash Can Outside Michigan Store Dies

KOCHVILLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say an emaciated calf left in a trash can outside of a store near Saginaw has died.

The calf was critically thin but breathing Saturday when an employee discovered it outside Gander Mountain in Saginaw County's Kochville Township. Sheriff William Federspiel said the calf "was on its last breath" when officers and animal experts arrived reported The Saginaw News.

Federspiel says the black-and-white calf had a U.S. Department of Agriculture tag and came from a Montcalm County farm. So far, it's unclear whether the animal was sold or stolen from the farm.

He says his department is pursuing animal cruelty charges and seeks information from the public.
