Elderly Woman Found Dead In Westland, Husband In Custody

WESTLAND (WWJ/AP) - Authorities are investigating after an elderly woman was found dead in Westland, and they think her husband might be responsible.

The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon at a home on Melvin Street, in a neighborhood near Middlebelt Road and Ann Arbor Trail where the couple has lived for more than 50 years.

According to reports, a neighbor called police after the 76-year-old man confessed to fatally shooting his 72-year-old wife. Police arrived on the scene and found the woman dead inside her home. At that time, the husband was placed under arrest. Officers also removed several guns from the home.

Neighbors told reporters that the suspect has Alzheimer's disease and might have been confused at the time of the shooting.

Westland police Lt. Todd Adams said investigators are continuing to question the husband and process evidence in the case.

No charges have been filed. Names of those involved weren't immediately released.
