Elderly Passenger Killed In Vacuum Truck Accident

MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An elderly woman has died after the car she was in crashed into the back of a vacuum truck.

The accident happened around 8:55 p.m. Monday on northbound S. Dixie Highway near Dallas Road, just south of Dunbar Road in Monroe Township.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says 84-year-old Mary Thompson was riding in a Chevrolet Impala driven by her 89-year-old husband, when the vehicle struck the back of a commercial vacuum truck.

Police say the vacuum truck was parked in the right lane because two workers were cleaning out a storm drain. The truck's caution lighting was activated at the time of the crash, according to police.

Thompson was rushed to St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo, Ohio where she died from her injuries. Her husband was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The two utility workers were uninjured.

Police say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is urged to contact police at 734-240-7711.
