Elderly Detroit Man Fatally Shot During Apparent Home Invasion

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for suspects after an elderly man was shot and killed at his east side home.

Police said the shooting happened during an apparent broad daylight break-in, at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, in the 19400-block of Albion St, near Sturgis St. and 8 Mile Road.

The victim, identified as 76-year-old Robert Peterson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports are that he was shot in the face.

Police said there were signs of forced entry at the home and they believe robbery may have been the motive.

Neighbor Denise, who did not give her last name, was visibly shaken when she spoke with WWJ's Jon Hewett later in the day.

"One of my nieces texted me and told me that he was shot, and he was killed. So, I left work and came home to see what was going on, because he was my mom's buddy," she said. "And I would cook food — because he was an elderly man — and I would cook dinner for him. Whenever I cooked I would fix him a plate and stuff and take it to him."

Denise said Peterson, to her knowledge, lived alone.

No arrests have been made and police said they did not have any information to share about possible suspects.

The victim's name was not immediately released.
