EF-1 Tornado Confirmed In Western Michigan Counties

DETROIT (WWJ) - Three tornadoes have been confirmed in Western Michigan from storms that blew through over the weekend.

Evan Webb with the National Weather Service says they started where the first reports of damage were and followed the damage - north and east from there.

"The first tornado we confirmed touched down in Ionia and Montclam counties - that was rated as an EF-1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 90 miles per hour -- it tracked for about eight miles," said Webb.

The second and third twisters blew through several other counties in Western Michigan, leaving a path of destruction miles-long.

The most serious damage happening in Bangor, Van Buren County-- and fairly significant structural damage was done to parts of Allegan County by that second twister that was confirmed.

Webb says tornado season in Michigan runs from April to August-- and we normally see four twisters in July on average. Western Michigan saw at least three in one day -- in August.
