Education Today: Stay Motivated!

By Sharlonda Buckman, CEO, Detroit Parent Network
Parents have a temporary respite in the summer. More minutes in the morning, less driving, fewer meetings and activities related to their children's education. It can be hard to stay motivated and keep kids on track with learning during the summer months.

My message to you is: Well, STAY MOTIVATED! Here's an alternative lens to consider. Extra time in the summer with your kids means more quality time with them.

Take the time to explore their goals and interests and find things related to those goals to involve them in.

Make summer an opportunity to create new traditions, make meals together, and take advantage of outdoor opportunities.

When I was a kid, my mother kept my four sisters and me on a specific schedule including: nap time, lunch, going to the recreation center, and simply family time together. We also had playtime, which mostly involved using our imaginations to build a boat, play tag, or climb a tree outdoors.

My mother always got the most important things right: love, time, and attention. Let's get that right for our kids.
