Eastern Michigan Athlete Charged In Sexual Assault

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - A member of Eastern Michigan University's track and field team has been charged with sexual assault.

The Ann Arbor News reports Eli Burdette was arraigned Sunday on first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct. A woman told police Saturday she was sexually assaulted in her off-campus apartment. The newspaper reports Burdette lives in the same complex.

A preliminary examination is scheduled Nov. 25. Burdette is a sophomore from Mansfield, Ohio. He competes in throws.

The Associated Press could not find a phone number for Burdette. Court records to find a possible attorney weren't available Monday.

Eastern Michigan says Monday a student-athlete charged in a felony warrant Sunday has been indefinitely suspended from practice and competitions. The school says the student-athlete "will not be returning to campus" while it "investigates the situation."
