Duggan To Discuss Detroit Summer Jobs Initiative

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Chris Lu and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan are scheduled to meet with local employers about hiring city youth for summer jobs.

The mayor's office says Duggan will update his Grow Detroit's Young Talent employment initiative Tuesday following the meeting with Lu.

Support for the program by President Barack Obama's administration will be discussed.

Duggan is challenging businesses and foundations to employ residents between the ages of 14 and 24. His goal this year is 8,000 summer work opportunities.

Earlier this year, officials said more than 11,000 applied online for summer jobs through the program, which is running in July and August.
