DTE To Install Solar-Powered Trash Compactors In Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - DTE Energy Co. plans to install solar-powered trash compactors and recycling units near its headquarters in downtown Detroit.

The utility says Thursday that the Bigbelly units are expected to arrive this summer.

DTE plans to install seven of the units that collect and compact trash on site and also gather aluminum and plastic containers for recycling.

Waste Management of Michigan Inc. will install and maintain them.

The pilot program supports DTE's Energize Detroit neighborhood revitalization initiative. If successful, the program could be expanded to other areas.
