Drone Video Gives Bird's-Eye View Of Vacant Home Fires Near I-94/I-75

Thick black smoke could be seen from both I-75 and I-94 Tuesday evening as a blaze consumed one home and moved to a larger adjacent home. Both east side Detroit homes were vacant.

Captivating video of the fire was posted to the YouTube channel detroitdrone.com. Shot from a specialized remote controlled aerial photography drone the small aircraft elevates above the ladders to get a better view of how the structure is burning.

Crews put out the fire as many curious onlookers gathered at the scene on DuBois near Medbury.

The area is east of I-75 and south of I-94. The cause of the fires is under investigation.

Some communities have sought to ban the controversial aircraft citing safety and privacy concerns. Detroit Drone owner Harry Arnold advocates for the responsible use of the technology.

Arnold has worked with the Detroit Fire Department for the past four years. When they need his eye in the sky, DPD contacts Arnold, "We get a text message when they need us at a fire or hazmat."

The video provided from the drone can be put to use in real time to more efficiently fight the fire. "The incident commander can view it from the command post," said Arnold.
