Drivers Who Are Late Renewing Registration May Get A Break

LANSING (AP) - Some drivers who are late renewing their license plate could have the $10 late fee waived under legislation heading toward Gov. Rick Snyder for his signature.

The Senate unanimously approved the bill Tuesday after the House passed it in February.

The legislation would require the secretary of state to waive a late fee if the motorist presents proof of storage insurance for the vehicle for the time when the vehicle was not registered and he or she makes an in-person request at a secretary of state branch office.

The state collects $10 million a year in late registration fee revenue. There is no estimate for how much state revenue would drop as a result of the bill.
