Driver Killed In Head-On Crash With DDOT Bus

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man who crashed head-on into a Detroit Department of Transportation bus was likely killed instantly.

The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. Thursday along Gratiot Avenue near Jane Avenue, just north of Conner Street on the city's east side.

Police say the victim's older, red Ford Escape was traveling northbound on Gration when it crossed the center line and crashed directly into the front of a DDOT bus. The driver, an unidentified male, was declared dead at the scene.

Sources tell WWJ they believe the driver either fell asleep or suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

Officials say eight passengers were on the bus at the time of the crash; five received non-life threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under investigation.
