DPS Report Outlines Investigations, Misconduct Within District

DETROIT (WWJ) - A new report from the Detroit Public Schools Inspector General outlines various investigations and misconduct within the district.

The Inspector General's office was re-instated by Transition Manager Steven Rhodes last year and it has already led to thousands of dollars being recovered.

One of the big investigations involved a $2.7 million bribery and kickback scheme that involved vendor Norman Shy, an assistant superintendent and 12 principals. All defendants, except for one principal, have pleaded guilty.

Other investigations resulted in one employee being fired after falsifying overtime to the tune of $59,000, the recovery of technology equipment that was taken by a former district worker and a principle who had set up a food store with a school without following district guidelines for fund-raising or cash management.
