Dozens Of Cats, Kittens Rescued From Southwest Detroit Home
DETROIT (WWJ) - A local animal welfare group has rescued dozens of cats and kittens, many which appear to be ill, from a home in southwest Detroit.
The community group Detroiters Helping Each Other told reporters they got a call Wednesday from a man who said he needed help removing at least 40 cats because he was being evicted from his home on Rathbone Street, in a neighborhood near I-75 and Fort Street.
The group contacted the Detroit Animal Welfare Group and together, volunteers responded to the scene and made contact with the homeowner, who refused to let them enter his home. Instead, the volunteers sent the man back inside his house with empty animal crates, and he returned to them with the cats inside.
Dozens of felines were taken from the scene -- including multiple kittens that appear to be just days old. All of the animals are in need of immediate veterinary care, with severe eye infections, blindness, urinary tract infections and parasites. At least two cats are missing one of their eyes.
The groups are expected to return to the home Thursday to remove the remaining cats. Volunteers say they're not sure how many animals are still in the home, since they weren't allowed to enter.
