Dozens Of Birds, 3 Rodents, Rescued From Dirty Ypsilanti Township Home

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — The Humane Society of Huron Valley has rescued 42 birds, three small Chilean rodents called degus and a rabbit from an unfit home in Ypsilanti Township.

Officials say the animals were removed from the home Oct. 26 after the Ann Arbor-based organization received a tip that the owner had an excessive number of birds living in poor conditions. The group says the animals were living in dirty, crowded cages inside a house filled with garbage.

Humane Society of Huron Valley chief operating officer Matt Schaecher says the owner claimed some of the birds were rescues but it appears many of them were used for breeding.

The organization is trying to find new homes for the rescued animals. It also plans to submit a report on the hoarding case to the Washtenaw County prosecutor's office for review.
