Downriver Man Dies While Snorkeling In Northern Michigan

EMPIRE, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a suburban Detroit man has died while snorkeling at a lake in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula.

Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel says the department's dive team found the body of 43-year-old Fred Hoffman of Trenton on Wednesday evening in Loon Lake.

Schendel tells the Traverse City Record-Eagle that Hoffman's family called 911 on Wednesday afternoon after he went missing while snorkeling with his brother.

His body was located 24 feet under water. An autopsy is planned to determined cause of death.

Loon Lake is an inland lake in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It's popular with kayakers, tubers and canoers traversing the Platte River.
