Downed Power Line Forces Closure Of M-59

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - A popular stretch of M-59 was completely shut down, Friday morning, due to a downed power line.

The situation unfolded early Friday morning on M-59 between Squirrel and Adams roads, just east of I-75 in Auburn Hills, where nearly 1,000 homes and businesses are without power.

A police officer on the scene told WWJ's Mike Campbell a transformer blew, which caused the power line to fall. Then, a vehicle either got tangled in the wire or tried to avoid it and caused an accident, the officer said. No injuries were reported.

At one point, the power line was on fire, but it was quickly extinguished. Utility crews are on the scene, working on the line. A worker said the problem is with a 120,000-volt sub-transmission line.

Motorists were urged to avoid the area.

M-59 was closed between Squirrel and Adams roads through the busy morning rush hour, but has since reopened.
