Dollar Store Security Guard Shoots Would-Be Carjacker

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a dollar store security guard fired shots at three men who were attempting to carjack a woman on Detroit's west side, injuring one of them and preventing the crime.

The incident took place just after 8 p.m. Friday at the Family Dollar store on Dexter Avenue, in a neighborhood near Livernois Avenue and Davison Street.

The store's security guard, a 47-year-old retired Detroit police officer, quickly sprung into action after he observed three black males attempting to carjack a woman in the parking lot, according to police. When one of the suspects pointed a gun, the guard opened fire and the three suspects fled on foot.

Police found one of the suspects a short time later in the street, bleeding from gunshot wounds to the stomach and arm. That suspect, a 23-year-old, is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

Police say the other two suspects remain on the loose, and should be considered armed and dangerous.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-267-4600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
