DMC Alerts Patients To Theft Of Personal Information

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's been a security breach of patient information at a local hospital.

Officials at DMC's Harper Hospital in Detroit say an employee who worked at the facility was found with personal information of more than 1,000 patients — and that info did include name, birthdate and, in some cases, social security number.

West Bloomfield Police came across the documents during an identity theft investigation.

DMC officials said that when they were notified, they initiated an internal review and immediately revoked the employee's access to its computer systems and all of the Detroit Medical Center hospitals.

Letters have been sent to all affected by this breach and the patients have been offered free credit monitoring.

"The entire Detroit Medical Center takes the protection of its patients' personal information very seriously. Security of that information is paramount and medical center officials say they deeply regret that this situation has occurred," a DMS spokesperson said in a statement.

Patients can call 855-830-9731 if they have questions or would like more information.
