Divers Recover Body Of Man At Baypoint Beach In Stony Creek Metropark

SHELBY TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - The search is over for a person missing in the water at Stony Creek Metropark.

Macomb County Sheriff's Department divers were called to the lake, around 5 p.m. Wednesday, near Baypoint Beach in Shelby Township.

The two swimmers had ventured about 300 feet out but still within the swim area, according to Shelby Township Battalion Chief Michael Gaydos, around 4:15 p.m. when one disappeared.

"The two gentlemen were swimming -- the one noticed that his buddy was having some problems so he went and tried to help him -- tried to rescue him. He then needed assistance himself. Other people pulled him out, he was then transported to Henry Ford Macomb (hospital)," said Gaydos. "But there were a few people here that witnessed, we kind of got area of where the drowning occurred, and that's were we concentrated our search."

Authorities eventually found the 23-year-old man, identified as Loyd Thomas Jr. of Warren, around 6:35 p.m., in water about ten to fifteen feet deep.

"I would assume they were doing pretty good for a while and then something happened," said Gaydos.

The man's name was not immediately released.
