Dirt Bike Rider Collides With Bear In Western Michigan [VIDEO]

BALDWIN, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A 20-year-old dirt bike rider says a collision with a bear along a rural Michigan road that was recorded on video hasn't changed his passion for riding.

Chris Deweerdt told MLive.com that the June 5 collision near Baldwin, about 175 miles northwest of Detroit, "just kind of happened."

The Lowell man was riding with a friend when the bear, which appears young based on its size, ran from the woods. Deweerdt fell off his bike and the bear tumbled before returning to the woods.

Deweerdt said they sat in the woods for about an hour before he was able to ride out and call 911 for help. Along with bumps and bruises, Deweerdt had a concussion.

It's not known whether the bear was injured.

The video was recorded by the friend, who was wearing a camera on his helmet, and posted online. Deweerdt says reaction to the video has been concern and surprise.
