Detroit's 2nd Meijer Store Ready To Open June 11

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Midwest retailer Meijer is ready to open its second store in the city of Detroit.

The Grand Rapids-based company is celebrating the grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Thursday on the city's west side. Company officials are expected to join local leaders at the event.

Construction started last year on the 190,000-square-foot store at the former Redford High School site, located along Grand River Avenue and McNichols Road just east of Lahser Road.

The store, which will open at 7 a.m. daily, includes a drive-thru pharmacy and gas station.

The opening comes about two years after Meijer opened its first Detroit store at 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue in the Gateway Marketplace. The supercenter is the latest of 11 new stores that Meijer is opening throughout the Midwest this year.
