Detroit Zoo Mourns Sudden Death Of Chimpanzee

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - The Detroit Zoo says that one of its chimpanzees has died.

Officials announced Tuesday night that 28-year-old Akati had collapsed while in the zoo's Great Apes of Harambee exhibit.

In a statement, the zoo said it was shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of Akati.

"She was a lovely, intelligent being and a wonderful mother to Ajua, 7, and Akira, 4," the statement read.

As with all animals that die at the zoo, an animal autopsy (also known as a necropsy) is being performed on Akati -- but zoo officials say her death was unexpected.

"Our staff, volunteers and visitors will miss her so very much," the zoo said.

Zoo officials said they are now monitoring all the chimpanzees closely, especially the younger ones.

According to the zoo, the average lifespan of a chimpanzee is 32 to 39 years.
