Detroit Zoo Hosts Exhibit About Explorer Ernest Shackleton

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Zoo is hosting an exhibit featuring explorer Ernest Shackleton and his Antarctic expedition that took place a century ago.

The zoo in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak says Shackleton's journey was a source of inspiration for the design of parts of its new $29.5 million Polk Penguin Conservation Center that opens in April.

The exhibit "Sir Ernest Shackleton Endurance Expedition 1914-1917: Triumph Against All Odds" is on display at the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery starting Saturday. It includes photographs and replicas of expedition artifacts and runs through Sept. 7.

Shackleton tried to cross the Antarctic via the South Pole. His journey turned into a desperate survival mission after his ship, the Endurance, was trapped and sunk by pack ice in 1915, leaving his team stranded.
