Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Shutting Down Tonight For 10 Days

DETROIT (WWJ) - Tonight will be the beginning of a big headache for travelers to and from Canada.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel is closing beginning at 8 tonight and it won't reopen until October 30.

Tunnel CEO Neil Belitsky says the closure is needed to renovate the ceiling of the tunnel, which dates back nearly 90 years. He says the closure will affect a lot of travelers.

"We process about 12,000 vehicles, 6,000 each way, on a daily basis," said Belitsky. "We understand that this is a hardship for many people, and this is the first time that we've actually closed the tunnel since 1993. So, we've done what we can to try to work around it but this is just one that we weren't able to avoid."

After the tunnel reopens, there will be weekend overnight closures until the renovation is complete in June 2018.
