Detroit Windsor Tunnel Renovation Plans Delayed Until 2017
DETROIT (AP) - Planned renovations to the Detroit Windsor Tunnel are being delayed until 2017 so the project can be re-engineered.
Officials announced the updated timeline Wednesday for the project, which includes a new concrete ceiling and is expected to lead to overnight closures.
The work was expected this summer, but Neal Belitsky, the tunnel company's president, says the revised schedule will delay closures until next year.
Belitsky has said that the tunnel's current ceiling is fine, but that it's the original concrete slab that was installed in the 1920s. The tunnel opened in 1930.
Other updates are to include electrical, communications, lighting and masonry work.
The work is a continuation of more than $50 million in investments the tunnel company says it has made to the tunnel since 1998.
