Detroit Unions Offer Neighborhood Health Fair, Lead Testing

DETROIT (AP) — A number of Detroit unions are planning to host a neighborhood health fair that will include free, on-site lead testing.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Saint Anne Catholic Church in southwest Detroit.

It is being hosted by the Detroit Federation of Teachers, Detroit Association of Educational Office Employees and the Detroit Federation of Paraprofessionals.

Pediatric dental checkups, health screenings, and guidance on lead poisoning also will be available.

Detroit Schools' officials announced last week that elevated lead or copper levels have been found in the water in 19 schools. The district said it is working to fix the problems and is providing bottled water.

Other school districts around the country are testing their water in response to the lead-tainted water crisis in Flint.
