Detroit To Spend $400,000 To Restore Historic Log Cabin
DETROIT (AP) — A historic log cabin in Detroit's Palmer Park will get a long-needed restoration.
City officials say $400,000 will be spent to stabilize the structure. Work will start next week and include cleanup, replacement of rotted logs, roof replacement and foundation repairs.
Once reopened, the log cabin will serve as a community center. It will offer educational programming and serve as a scenic backdrop for weddings and other events.
The cabin dates to 1887. It was the summer home for Sen. Thomas W. Palmer who gave it and 140 acres of land to the city in 1893.
It served as a visitor center and museum for decades, but was closed in 1979.
People for Palmer Park volunteers have spent the past several years cleaning and fixing up the cabin.
