Detroit To Add Complaints Against Police To Crime Data
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Police Department plans a program allowing public access to department data online that includes complaints against officers and police runs to problem areas.
The Detroit News reports officers' names won't be made public, but the nature of complaints by precinct will be available. Police Chief James Craig says: "If you want to build trust, you can't act like you're hiding something."
The newspaper says the initiative is part of a White House public safety data effort that has dozens of participating police departments.
The Detroit information will be integrated into crime data on the city's website, which already includes details on type of crime, when and where it occurred, and information such as whether a gun was involved.
A launch is planned in the next 30 days.
