Detroit Titans Fire Coach Ray McCallum

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) -- The University of Detroit-Mercy announced Friday that the men's basketball program is parting ways with head coach Ray McCallum.

"After a careful and long review of the entire men's basketball program, I determined it was necessary to have a change in leadership," athletic director Robert C. Vowels, Jr. said in a release. "I would like to thank coach McCallum for his eight years of service at the University and for all of his efforts."

McCallum coached the Titans for eight seasons, ending this season at 16-15, 9-9 in the Horizon League for sixth place. In his eight years, he totaled a 130-132 record, including 66-72 in league play, and made two postseason appearances.

His Titan team won the Horizon League Championship in 2012 and earned an NIT berth in 2013.

Dan Leach, radio play-by-play voice of the Titans, spoke about McCallum's time in Detroit.

"[It's] very sad to hear about the release of Coach McCallum from the Detroit Titans," Leach said. "[He's] truly one of the most gracious and passionate men I have ever known."

McCallum's son -- Ray McCallum Jr. -- played at the university for three seasons.
