Detroit Students Campaign To Save World-Famous Music Program From Budget Cuts
DETROIT (WWJ) - With kids set to return to class in just over a week, budget cuts could pull the plug on music and arts at a Detroit high school that is world-famous for its performing arts program.
Parents at Renaissance High School say they've been told that the cuts will mean the elimination of the school's fine arts program, and result in as many as 43 students per classroom.
Renaissance students have started a Facebook page and a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #SaveRHS, to inform people about the cuts. They also have an online petition with more than 2,600 signatures seeking to restore the programs.
Renaissance High graduate Jillian Jackson said getting rid of the program would be a huge disappointment, adding that she never would have received a full scholarship to Wayne State University if not for her experience at the school.
DPS officials say no decision has been made to eliminate music or arts in the district, but said that some school-based cuts had to be made due to district-wide budget cuts.
