Detroit Seeks Bids For Old Tiger Stadium Site
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's a new plan for an embattled piece of land in Detroit -- the spot at Michigan and Trumbull... that was once Tiger Stadium.
The stadium was demolished back in 2009, but now the city will take Request For Proposals to develop that site.
"We're doing RFP for mixed-use development that will include a field. And, you know, that's something that I've been saying for two or three years, if not longer actually," says George Jackson, president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Development Corporation, who spoke to WWJ Newsradio 950 about the development at the Michigan Chronicle's "Pancakes & Politics" event.
As for some buyers for the Tiger Stadium property, Jackson says, "Yeah, we're going to do an RFP, and there's a lot of interest because what we need is density in that community."
So, why is the Tiger Stadium site so hot?
Jackson says, "Corktown's a very hot community and they need housing and they need retail. And so, we want to do retail and housing and still have a play field for kids."
And Jackson says that play field for kids will be a partnership with the city and the Detroit Police Athletic League to build a small field for youth baseball.
