Detroit School Of Rock And Pop Music Offers Instruction, Real Experience

Detroit is known for a lot of things including its music so now the Detroit School of Rock and Pop Music is helping the up and comers get their music heard.

This feature is part of CBS 62's Eye On Detroit series as seen weekdays during "CBS This Morning" between 7 and 9 a.m.

"We started this place to create a home for musicians to come together and learn together," said Executive Producer Jason Gittinger.

The courses put the students into real situations a band would be involved in. They are assigned to groups. They rehearse, play shows across the region and just about anything else a real band could be involved in.

"... we not only give people lessons on their instruments, but we put them into action on a weekly basis," added Gittinger.

The musicians are offered to organizations who might not be able to afford big-budget acts. Gittinger said, "If somebody has a great cause and needs music to be a part of it ..." they can help.

Gittinger says the value of programs like this are significant.

"Arts and culture sort of make everything happen. It's the creative force behind our community and we hope to be a part of that for the future." he said.
