Detroit Ranks 10th In Forbes' Most Affordable U.S. Cities

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - Detroit is one of the nation's top ten affordable cities, according to a new survey from Forbes Magazine.

Factoring in the metro area —  including surrounding cities like Dearborn, Warren and Livonia, Detroit ranked in at number 10, tied with Columbus, Ohio, among the most affordable place to live, according to the new list released by the business magazine on Wednesday.

The business publication took multiple expenses and other aspects into account. Forbes says the cost of groceries is 5.5 percent below the national average, utilities are over 2.5 percent, and health care about 1.5 percent less. The median family income is just under $52,000.

Number one on the list is Birmingham, Alabama, with Detroit falling just behind Indianapolis, Indiana, which snagged the number nine spot.
