Detroit Police Sergeant Dies Days After Being Shot On City's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A Detroit police sergeant who was shot at a gas station on the city's east side has died.

Detroit police confirmed to WWJ Newsradio 950 that Ken Steil, a 17-year veteran of the department, died Saturday after being shot in the shoulder by a suspect with a sawed-off shotgun.

Authorities originally said that Steil was expected to survive. He was taken to St. John Hospital late Monday night where he was reported to be in fair condition.

The Detroit Police Department released a statement on Saturday after Steil's passing:

"It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Sergeant Kenneth Steil, badge S-54, assigned to the Ninth Precinct. Sergeant Steil succumbed to his injuries after he was shot in the line of duty on September 12, 2016, while attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for a previous shooting. Sergeant Steil served the department and the citizens of the city of Detroit with great dedication, honor and exemplary service for over twenty-years.

The Detroit Police Department extends our deepest heartfelt sympathy to his family, friends and his brothers and sisters in blue. We ask that you would keep us all in your prayers and may he rest in peace."

Police Chief James Craig said officers were pursuing a 21-year-old man suspected in several crimes. A police supervisor "went in for pursuit," Craig said, and the suspect shot him.

Craig said the suspect -- 21-year-old Marquise Cromer -- was wanted in the shooting of his own father during dinner at a home on Dickerson Ave. on Sunday.

In connection with the gas station incident, Cromer was charged Thursday with the following: one count of assault with intent to murder; one count of resisting and obstructing police officer causing serious impairment; three counts of resisting and obstructing a police officer; one count of possession of a short-barreled shotgun, and felony firearm.

A Friday funeral is planned.
