Detroit Police Search For Teen Who Disappeared With Man She Met Online

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for a missing 13-year-old girl with a mental disorder who might have run off with a much older man she met online.

Police say Mikayla Champion voluntarily left her home in the 22500 block of Frisbee, near Berg Road and Pembroke Avenue, around 10 p.m. Thursday.

A short time later, she was seen at the BP gas station on the corner of 7 Mile and Telegraph roads, along with an unknown man, believed to be about 40- or 45-years-old.

Lula Rainey, Mikayla's grandmother, said her granddaughter hasn't been getting along with her mother over the past few weeks following an incident at school.

"The school that she was going to, she got into trouble. She was not permanently kicked out of the school, but her mother made the choice to pull her out of the school," Rainey told WWJ's Chris Renwick. "And she's just been acting out ever since her mother pulled her up out of school."

Rainey said she's especially worried because Mikayla has never done anything like this before.

"My grandchild, she has never been a wild child out here in the streets, doing any and everything. She's never been a child like that, so that's why this is very scary," Rainey said. "A lot of times you see this stuff on TV happening to different people but when it hits home it's like 'Oh my God.'"

Mikayla is described as a black female with a medium complexion, about 5' tall and 90 lbs. with black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black pants, white jacket, and purple gym shoes. She may also be carrying a purple and white overnight bag. Police say she is in good physical condition but suffers from bipolar disorder.

Police believe Mikayla knew the man she was with from the internet. He's described as a black male about 6'5" tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. He was driving a late-90s model gray Ford Taurus with a temporary license plate.
